Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), for the solar-powered illumination of the Howrah Bridge.

According to a report, the MoU was signed at Coal Bhawan, the CIL headquarters, in the presence of CIL Chairman P M Prasad, SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman, Deputy Chairman Samrat Rahi and other officials.

As per officials, the project will involve dynamic lighting to highlight the structure of the Howrah Bridge, also known as Rabindra Setu, and offer a night-time visual experience for commuters and visitors. The bridge, built in 1943, is used daily by over one lakh vehicles and around 1.5 lakh pedestrians.

The plan includes volumetric and skeleton lighting, along with synchronised music shows.
“This project is a significant upgrade over the existing illumination, which has been in place for years. The tendering process is underway, and we expect completion within a year,” said Samrat Rahi.
