Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company is in the final stages of securing a major order for ten Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) from China Merchants Energy Shipping, in what could be one of the significant tanker deals of the year.

Industry sources indicate that negotiations between the two sides are nearing completion, with contract details expected to be finalized soon. The vessels are likely to be deployed on long-haul crude oil routes, supporting China’s energy transportation requirements.

The potential order reflects continued strong demand for large crude carriers amid evolving global energy trade patterns and fleet renewal needs. Shipping companies are increasingly looking to modernize their fleets with more fuel-efficient and environmentally compliant vessels.

For Dalian Shipbuilding, the deal would further strengthen its position in the global tanker construction market and add to its growing orderbook. The yard has been actively securing contracts across various vessel segments as shipbuilding demand remains robust.

Analysts note that the VLCC segment has seen renewed interest due to shifting oil trade flows and tightening vessel supply, which have supported charter rates and encouraged fresh investments.

If concluded, the agreement would underscore China’s continued focus on expanding and upgrading its tanker fleet while supporting domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
