Director General of Shipping, Shri Shyam Jagannathan, visited Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata on March 13, reaffirming the Government of India’s intensified focus on expanding the country’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
The visit comes amid a major policy push by the Centre, including a ₹24,736 crore allocation under the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme aimed at accelerating vessel construction in India and strengthening the sector’s global competitiveness.
Complementing this initiative is the Shipbuilding Development Scheme with a total outlay of ₹19,989 crore. The programme includes ₹9,930 crore earmarked for the development of Greenfield shipbuilding clusters and ₹8,261 crore for the expansion and modernisation of existing Brownfield facilities. The measures are designed to enhance capacity, upgrade infrastructure, and strengthen the broader shipbuilding ecosystem across the country.
Officials said the integrated approach reflects the Government of India’s commitment, along with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), to position India among the world’s leading shipbuilding nations by 2047.
The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) is overseeing end-to-end implementation of the schemes, focusing on timely approvals, adherence to regulatory standards, and efficient progress across projects.
As one of India’s premier defence shipyards, GRSE continues to play a significant role in advancing India’s maritime capabilities. The shipyard is recognised for its strong design and engineering expertise, modular construction practices, and multi-yard production capacity.
The visit to GRSE underscores the collaborative, mission-mode approach currently shaping India’s maritime growth strategy, aligning central policy initiatives, implementing agencies, and shipyards to accelerate scale, speed, and self-reliance in the sector.
