MacGregor has secured a cargo-handling equipment order from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for six new 1,700 TEU dual-fuel LNG-powered containerships being built for CMA CGM. The vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2031.
Under the contract, MacGregor will provide a comprehensive package of cargo-handling solutions, including the design and key components of hatch covers, steel structures and hatch-cover fabrication. The scope also covers cell guides, deck stanchions and fixed container fittings.
The six containerships will be capable of operating on LNG and will also be prepared to use future low-carbon fuels. Their deployment forms part of CMA CGM’s broader fleet renewal and energy-transition strategy and supports the group’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The project is also significant for India’s shipbuilding sector. CMA CGM is set to become the first major international container shipping company to commission LNG-powered vessels from an Indian shipyard, with all six vessels being built at Cochin Shipyard.
MacGregor said the order was booked among its second-quarter 2026 orders received. The company described the project as an important milestone for sustainable shipbuilding and for strengthening India’s position in the global maritime industry.
The vessels will add LNG-fuelled capacity to CMA CGM’s fleet while highlighting the growing role of Indian shipyards in the construction of lower-emission commercial vessels for major international carriers.
