Evergreen Marine has showcased its first 16,000-TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessel, EVER ECO, marking a significant step in the carrier’s fleet decarbonisation and sustainable shipping strategy.

The newly introduced boxship is designed to operate on both conventional marine fuel and methanol, enabling reduced greenhouse gas emissions and greater compliance with evolving international environmental regulations.

Industry observers said the launch of EVER ECO highlights the growing shift among major container shipping lines toward alternative fuels and low-carbon vessel technologies as the maritime sector accelerates efforts to meet global emission reduction targets.

The 16,000-TEU vessel is expected to be deployed on major long-haul trade routes, strengthening Evergreen’s operational efficiency while supporting greener maritime transport solutions.

Methanol-powered vessels are increasingly gaining traction across the shipping industry due to their potential to lower carbon emissions and support future adoption of green methanol produced from renewable energy sources.

Shipping analysts noted that investments in dual-fuel ships also reflect carriers’ long-term preparations for stricter environmental standards set by the International Maritime Organization and other global regulatory bodies.

Evergreen has been expanding its next-generation fleet with energy-efficient vessels and sustainable technologies as competition intensifies among global shipping lines to modernise fleets and reduce environmental impact.

The introduction of EVER ECO comes amid rising investments across the container shipping sector in methanol, LNG, ammonia-ready, and other alternative-fuel vessel programmes aimed at supporting the industry’s transition toward net-zero emissions.
