Mizoram’s rail connectivity is beginning to reshape the movement of passengers and goods across the state, following the introduction of passenger and freight train services that have significantly improved transportation and logistics.

In a historic milestone, the first-ever Food Corporation of India (FCI) food grain cargo train arrived at Sairang Railway Station on March 3, 2026. The train consisted of 42 wagons carrying around 25,900 quintals of rice from Punjab, marking a major step toward strengthening rail-based freight connectivity and ensuring a more efficient supply chain for essential commodities in the state.

The successful unloading of the FCI food grain rake at Sairang highlights the growing operational capability of the terminal and underlines the expanding role of railway infrastructure in supporting Mizoram’s logistics network and food distribution system.

The development follows the inauguration of the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line on September 13, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The project marked a historic moment for Mizoram, as it brought Aizawl onto India’s railway map by directly linking the state to the national railway network. Beyond improving transportation, the railway line is expected to create new opportunities for economic growth and boost tourism across the region.

Freight operations on the Bairabi–Sairang section have gained momentum since the line became operational. Soon after the inauguration, the first freight rake carrying 21 cement wagons reached Sairang, marking the start of regular cargo movement to the state.

Between April 2025 and March 2026, the Sairang terminal handled more than 30 freight rakes, reflecting the gradual expansion of rail-based cargo operations in Mizoram. During this period, the terminal unloaded around 3.5 rakes of cement, along with other key commodities such as automobiles (2 rakes), fertilizers (0.5 rake), stone chips (20.5 rakes) and sand (4 rakes).

The handling of these commodities highlights Sairang’s emergence as a growing freight hub, supporting infrastructure development and improving the supply of construction materials and essential goods in the state.

In December 2025, the terminal also received its first inward automobile rake carrying 119 passenger vehicles, demonstrating the line’s capability to handle high-value bulk consignments.

To further strengthen logistics in the region, Indian Railways has also introduced refrigerated parcel van services aimed at transporting horticultural and perishable produce. The initiative is expected to expand market access for farmers and traders in Mizoram by enabling faster and more efficient transportation of agricultural products.
