Marking a significant milestone in India’s export journey under the newly implemented India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the first cargo shipment to the United Kingdom was ceremonially flagged off from the cargo terminal at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by officials from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), airport cargo authorities, and exporters, highlighting the beginning of a new era in bilateral trade between India and the UK. During the event, officials demonstrated the complete cargo handling process, including packing, security scanning, and the movement of cargo containers to the aircraft before the inaugural shipment departed for the United Kingdom.

The first consignment under the FTA comprised ready-made garments, one of India’s key export sectors expected to benefit substantially from the trade agreement.

Speaking on the occasion, Aditya Singh Chauhan, Deputy Director, DGFT, stated that the India–UK FTA provides zero-duty market access for nearly 99% of Indian products entering the UK. He noted that ready-made garments, which previously faced import duties ranging from 12% to 20%, will now enter the UK duty-free, significantly improving the competitiveness of Indian exporters in one of the country’s most important overseas markets.

“The removal of tariffs will enhance the price competitiveness of Indian products, resulting in higher exports, greater market access, and expanded business opportunities for exporters,” he said.

Azad Singh, In-charge of Amritsar Cargo, said the inaugural shipment under the agreement demonstrates the growing importance of Amritsar as an international export gateway. While exports to the UK have been taking place from the airport for several years, the zero-duty regime is expected to encourage many more exporters, particularly small and medium enterprises, to explore the UK market.

He added that Amritsar Cargo currently handles exports of ready-made garments, sports goods, engineering products, and a wide range of perishable agricultural commodities, including Alphonso and Kesar mangoes, baby corn, green chillies, and fresh vegetables.

Industry stakeholders believe the implementation of the India–UK FTA will provide a major boost to exporters from Punjab by reducing trade barriers, improving market access, and enhancing the global competitiveness of Indian products. The agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral trade while creating new opportunities for businesses across multiple sectors.
