India’s shipbuilding sector achieved a significant milestone with the delivery of FRISIAN FUTURE by Chowgule Shipbuilding Division to Boomsma Shipping. The vessel is the first ship constructed and delivered from the recommissioned Mangaluru Shipyard, symbolising the successful revival of a once-bankrupt facility into a modern export-oriented shipbuilding hub.

The Mangaluru yard was restored and made operational within just 18 months, making it one of the fastest shipyard revival projects globally. According to the company, the achievement follows nearly three years of focused efforts involving infrastructure rebuilding , capability enhancement and large-scale workforce training.

Designed for the future of sustainable maritime transport, FRISIAN FUTURE features a diesel-electric propulsion system combined with wind-assisted technology, enabling the vessel to comply with stringent European environmental regulations. The eco-friendly design reflects the growing global transition toward low-emission and energy-efficient cargo shipping solutions.

Speaking on the occasion, Arjun Chowgule said the delivery demonstrates that the Mangaluru facility is now fully equipped to produce export-grade vessels meeting international standards.

“This is a significant moment for us. The delivery of FRISIAN FUTURE confirms that the Mangaluru shipyard is operating as a modern facility capable of producing export-grade vessels to global standards. Mangaluru and Karnataka offer strong fundamentals for shipbuilding, and we expect to build on this,” he stated.

Chowgule SBD is recognised as the world’s largest supplier to the European dry cargo fleet and is also the only Indian shipyard to publish an ESG report, highlighting its focus on sustainability and responsible industrial practices.

The revived Mangaluru facility currently supports more than 6,000 jobs under the Government of India’s Make in India initiative, strengthening the country’s ambitions to emerge as a major global shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing destination.

The delivery of FRISIAN FUTURE is being viewed as an important step forward not only for Chowgule SBD, but also for India’s growing capabilities in green shipbuilding and sustainable global shipping.
