Prominent defence shipyard Garden Reach Ship-builders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd on Wednesday entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shift Clean Energy (Shift), Seatech Solutions International (Seatech), and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
The collaboration aims to develop Electric Tugs named E-VOLT 50. This project seeks to mitigate carbon emissions, enhance operational efficiency, and establish new benchmarks for performance and environmental sustainability within the tugboat industry.
GRSE will be responsible for constructing the platform based on the design by Seatech, with Shift providing the energy storage expertise, and ABS ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory standards, thereby certifying safety, reliability, and adherence to regulations.
Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE, emphasised the significance of the MoU, stating, that “E-VOLT 50″ represents a significant leap towards a cleaner and greener future for the maritime sector. By leveraging sustainable energy solutions and cutting-edge technology, the collaboration aims to redefine standards in terms of performance, efficiency, and environmental stewardship.”
GRSE has already made strides in green shipbuilding, currently engaged in constructing a zero-emission electric ferry for the Government of West Bengal. This ferry, designed to accommodate 150 passengers, is poised to revolutionise passenger services along the Hooghly and other major rivers upon commissioning.
