Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and IKEA Supply Chain Operations have agreed to deploy HMM’s ‘Green Sailing Service’.
According to HMM, this Green Sailing Service is a low-carbon ocean transport solution that intends to help both firms reduce their environmental impact and contribute to the decarbonisation of ocean transportation.
The primary goal of this effort is to significantly reduce CO2e emissions by replacing traditional fossil fuels with ecologically appropriate, waste-based biofuels for ocean transportation of IKEA items.
Biofuels used for this service are ISCC-certified biofuels that are manufactured from waste-based biomass. HMM is deploying sustainable biofuel for its FIM service connecting the Far East, India, Mediterranean.
Notably, the arrangement will assist cut about 11,500 tonnes of CO2e emissions from 1 March 2024 to 28 February 2025, by using such biofuels throughout the entirety of IKEA’s ocean freight voyage with HMM.
The CO2e emissions avoided (11,500 tonnes) by this green cooperation with IKEA are equivalent to carrying 14,534 TEU of Zero Emission Cargo from Asia (Busan) to Europe (Rotterdam).
IKEA’s objective is to cut relative GHG emissions from product transportation by 70 per cent by 2030 and become a zero-emission freight owner by 2040.
HMM, which debuted the ‘Green Sailing Service’ earlier this year, plans to expand the scope of its services through broad collaboration.
An HMM official said: “We will keep looking for ways to make sustainable development our top goal, which will help us make important progress towards carbon neutrality.”
In May, HMM reported increased earnings in the first quarter thanks to doubled container freight rates.
