India is expected to seek greater clarity on the tariff treatment being extended by the United States to competing trading partners during the next round of bilateral trade discussions scheduled for June. The move comes as New Delhi aims to secure fair market access for Indian exporters and strengthen its position in ongoing negotiations for a broader trade arrangement.
Officials familiar with the discussions said India wants to better understand how US tariff policies and concessions apply to countries competing with Indian exports in sectors such as textiles, engineering goods, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products. The government is particularly focused on ensuring that Indian products are not placed at a disadvantage in the American market compared to goods from other major exporting nations.
The planned discussions are expected to cover a range of trade issues, including tariffs, market access, supply chain cooperation, digital trade, and investment facilitation. India is also likely to seek clarity on any preferential arrangements or tariff relaxations being offered by the US to countries under existing trade agreements or strategic partnerships.
Trade experts said India’s approach reflects growing concerns over shifting global trade dynamics and increasing competition in key export markets. Indian industry bodies have repeatedly called for improved tariff competitiveness to help exporters maintain market share in the United States, one of India’s largest trading partners.
The June talks are seen as an important step toward advancing bilateral economic cooperation and resolving pending trade issues between the two countries. Both sides have been working to deepen commercial ties amid efforts to diversify supply chains and expand strategic economic engagement.
