India’s soybean imports climbed to a record level in May, driven by strong demand from African markets and increased procurement by domestic processors seeking to supplement local supplies. The sharp rise highlights the growing role of international trade in balancing demand and supply dynamics within the country’s oilseed sector.

Market participants attributed the surge to competitive global prices and favorable import economics, which encouraged buyers to secure larger volumes from overseas suppliers. Demand from Africa also supported higher trade flows, contributing to the record monthly import figures.

The increase comes at a time when India’s edible oil and feed industries are closely monitoring raw material availability and pricing trends. Higher soybean imports are expected to help maintain adequate inventories for crushing operations while supporting the production of soybean meal and edible oils.

Industry observers note that the strong import performance reflects evolving trade patterns and rising consumption requirements across key markets. Looking ahead, import volumes will likely remain influenced by global soybean prices, crop prospects in major producing countries, and demand trends in both domestic and export markets.

The record May figures underscore India’s growing integration with global agricultural supply chains and the importance of imports in meeting the needs of its expanding food processing and livestock sectors.
