    India will require around 215 next-generation multimodal logistics parks (MMLPs) by 2047 to efficiently manage rising freight volumes and support the country’s long-term economic growth, according to a new industry report.

    The study highlighted that rapid industrialisation, expanding e-commerce activity, increasing containerisation, and higher domestic consumption are expected to significantly increase freight demand over the next two decades. To address these challenges, India will need large-scale integrated logistics hubs equipped with advanced warehousing, rail connectivity, digital systems, and sustainable transport infrastructure.

    The report noted that the proposed logistics parks would play a critical role in reducing logistics costs, improving cargo movement efficiency, and strengthening multimodal connectivity between ports, airports, rail terminals, and highways.

    Experts said the development of modern logistics parks is essential for supporting India’s ambition of becoming a global manufacturing and export hub under initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti and the National Logistics Policy.

    The planned MMLPs are expected to facilitate faster cargo aggregation, lower turnaround times, and improve supply chain resilience across sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, retail, pharmaceuticals, and e-commerce.

    Industry stakeholders also stressed the importance of private sector participation, policy support, and infrastructure investments to accelerate the rollout of these facilities across key industrial and consumption centres in the country.

    India’s logistics sector is witnessing increasing investments in integrated freight infrastructure as cargo volumes continue to rise across road, rail, air, and maritime transport networks.
