India has urged South Korean shipowners to register vessels under the Indian flag and explore investment opportunities in the country’s expanding port and maritime infrastructure sector.
The invitation reflects New Delhi’s broader push to strengthen its shipping ecosystem, increase the share of Indian-flagged tonnage, and attract global capital into logistics and port modernisation projects. Officials highlighted India’s growing trade volumes, strategic location, and ongoing reforms aimed at improving ease of doing business in the maritime sector.
South Korean shipping and industrial groups are seen as potential partners given their global presence in ship ownership, shipbuilding, terminal operations, and maritime technology. India is also seeking deeper collaboration in areas such as coastal shipping, green ports, smart logistics, and ship repair.
Industry observers note that greater foreign participation could support capacity expansion at Indian ports, improve operational efficiency, and enhance integration with major Asian trade routes.
The outreach comes as India continues to position itself as a key maritime hub and seeks stronger economic ties with South Korea through trade, infrastructure, and industrial cooperation.
