Indian Railways recorded a strong operational performance in June, with freight loading increasing 4% year-on-year to 142 million tonnes (MT), reflecting sustained demand from core industries and reinforcing the rail network’s pivotal role in the country’s logistics ecosystem.

The growth in freight movement was driven by higher transportation of key commodities such as coal, cement, steel, iron ore, food grains, fertilizers, and containers. Continued improvements in network efficiency, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced freight services have enabled Indian Railways to handle rising cargo volumes while supporting industrial and economic activity across the country.

In addition to robust freight performance, Indian Railways transported 63.8 crore passengers during the month, highlighting the network’s dual role as the backbone of both freight logistics and public transportation. The increase in passenger traffic reflects sustained demand for rail travel across suburban, regional, and long-distance routes.

The higher freight loading is expected to strengthen supply chains by providing industries with a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable mode of transport. Increased rail cargo movement also helps reduce dependence on road transport, easing highway congestion and lowering carbon emissions while improving overall logistics efficiency.

Indian Railways continues to invest in capacity enhancement projects, dedicated freight corridors, station redevelopment, and digital technologies to improve operational performance. These initiatives are aimed at increasing freight share, reducing transit times, and delivering more reliable services to customers across diverse sectors.

Industry experts believe the steady growth in both freight and passenger volumes underscores the resilience of India’s rail network and its expanding contribution to economic development. With continued infrastructure investments and policy support, Indian Railways is expected to play an even greater role in facilitating trade, strengthening multimodal connectivity, and supporting the nation’s long-term logistics ambitions.
