India’s tobacco export value has recorded significant growth over the past decade, rising 166% to ₹17,192.04 crore, driven by stronger global demand and increased market penetration. The growth highlights the expanding role of tobacco products in India’s agricultural export basket.

The surge in export earnings reflects improved overseas demand for Indian tobacco, including processed tobacco products and raw tobacco varieties. Exporters have benefited from access to new markets, improved quality standards and competitive pricing, helping India strengthen its position among major tobacco suppliers globally.

The increase in export value has provided a boost to tobacco farmers, processors and exporters involved in the supply chain. Government initiatives focused on export promotion, quality improvement and market diversification have also supported the sector’s growth over the years.

Industry stakeholders said maintaining global competitiveness will depend on meeting international regulatory requirements, expanding into emerging markets and improving value addition across tobacco products. Despite challenges from changing consumption patterns and stricter regulations, India’s tobacco exports continue to contribute significantly to agricultural trade revenues.
