In a significant administrative development, the Government of India has approved the appointment of Mr Praneet Choudhary, IRAS (2008 batch), as Deputy Director General (Director-level) in the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), Mumbai, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

The appointment has been cleared under the Central Staffing Scheme, following Mr Choudhary’s earlier recommendation for central deputation by the Ministry of Railways. The scheme governs the deployment of senior civil servants to key positions in the Central Government.

    Five-Year Tenure Approved

As per the official order, Mr Choudhary will hold the post for a fixed tenure of five years, effective from the date he assumes charge. His appointment will remain valid until the completion of the tenure or until further orders from the competent authority, whichever is earlier.

    Key Role in Maritime Governance

Headquartered in Mumbai, the Directorate General of Shipping is the apex regulatory authority responsible for maritime safety, shipping standards, seafarer certification, and compliance with international maritime conventions. Mr Choudhary’s appointment is viewed as an important step towards strengthening India’s maritime administration and regulatory oversight.

    Immediate Relief and Joining Timeline

The Ministry has directed that Mr Choudhary be relieved from his current assignment with immediate effect to enable him to take charge of his new role without delay. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoP&T) has reiterated that, in line with Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) guidelines, officers appointed under the Central Staffing Scheme must join their new postings within three weeks of the issuance of the appointment order.

The appointment underscores the government’s focus on placing experienced officers in strategic roles to support the growth and governance of India’s maritime sector.
