Karnataka Government Polytechnic (KPT) has been selected by the Government of Karnataka for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in logistics and supply chain at an estimated cost of ₹75 crore.
KPT Principal Harisha Shetty said the procurement process for machinery and equipment required for the facility has already commenced, with the CoE expected to be operational by August. Initially, the centre will function from existing infrastructure within the campus.
The CoE aims to strengthen skill development and provide industry-oriented training, benefiting not only KPT students but also those from nearby colleges. It is expected to serve as a shared resource hub for academic institutions in the region.
The initiative is part of a broader state strategy to enhance Karnataka’s technology ecosystem through Centres of Excellence built around four key pillars—industry collaboration, research and academia, government support, and startup ecosystem development. These centres are designed to drive innovation, support research and development, and address evolving industry requirements.
According to student welfare officer Harish C P, the state government plans to establish CoEs at nine locations with a total outlay of around ₹2,500 crore. Notably, KPT is the only polytechnic institution in the state to be selected for such a facility, with the remaining centres planned at engineering colleges and universities.
The choice of Mangaluru for a logistics-focused CoE is strategic, given its established port infrastructure, active import-export ecosystem, and strong multimodal connectivity via air and sea.
