Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR Airport), has introduced a key infrastructure enhancement to support the growing demands of cargo operations: the Airport Truck Management Facility (ATMF). Developed in collaboration with Shell Mobility, the ATMF is aimed at streamlining truck traffic and improving logistics efficiency within and around the airport.
The facility supports BLR Airport’s recent expansion, marked by the launch of India’s largest Greenfield Domestic Cargo Terminal. With increasing cargo volumes, the need for effective truck movement and logistics coordination has become crucial. The ATMF responds to this demand by easing congestion, improving turnaround times, and offering amenities for truck drivers.
Streamlined Operations Through Digital Integration
Currently managing the flow of around 1,600 trucks daily, the ATMF is designed to reduce delays and inefficiencies often associated with high-volume cargo hubs. It features over 250 parking bays and incorporates several digital tools to optimize operations:
- Common pre-check-ins and paperless entry processes
- App-based approvals and handheld devices for check-ins
- Real-time processing for quicker clearances
- 24/7 CCTV surveillance to enhance security and monitoring
According to BLR Airport, these features have collectively reduced truck turnaround time from four hours to one hour, with nearly 78% of trucks waiting less than 20 minutes before entering the cargo terminal.
Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer, Bangalore International Airport Limited, stated, “Given the significant increase in cargo here at BLR Airport, it was time to invest in solutions that can ensure seamless and timely movement of trucks, as well as the well-being of truck drivers by providing essential amenities. That’s where BLR Cargo, together with Shell Mobility India, conceived India’s first on-airport truck management facility with a fully automated paperless truck entry and exit process. This has meant that cargo movement is now faster, more efficient, and better organized, significantly reducing wait times and congestion.”
Driver-Centric Infrastructure
The ATMF also addresses a long-standing gap in infrastructure—facilities for truck drivers. With amenities including clean dormitories, restrooms, and access to food and beverages, the facility is built to support the welfare of drivers, acknowledging their vital role in the logistics chain.
Sanjay Varkey, Director, Shell Mobility India, commented, “Enhancing logistics efficiency involves the seamless movement of cargo, ensuring safe and sustainable operations, and caring for drivers and the on-ground community. The Airport Truck Management Facility provides a structured experience with a smart digital cargo truck movement system, ample parking with CCTV surveillance, clean dormitories and washrooms, and convenient food and beverage options. By integrating technology with essential driver services, Shell Mobility is transforming life’s journeys and enhancing efficiency, safety, and overall working conditions.”
A Step Toward Sustainable, Scalable Logistics
The ATMF reflects BLR Airport’s focus on scalable, future-ready logistics solutions. By combining digital tools, physical infrastructure, and human-centric services, the facility aims to improve cargo operations while contributing to long-term sustainability goals.
BLR Cargo’s latest initiative reinforces its position as a leading cargo hub in India while offering a model for other airports seeking to build efficient, driver-friendly logistics ecosystems.
