Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd (KMEW) has acquired around 15 acres of waterfront land in Saphale, Palghar, Maharashtra, through its subsidiary Knowledge Shipyard Pvt Ltd, with an option to expand by an additional 5 acres, the company said on Monday.

The site, located along the Vaitarna River and in proximity to the upcoming Vadhvan Port, is set to be developed into a shipyard as KMEW expands into commercial shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure.

According to the company, the land offers approximately 188 metres of waterfront access, along with a natural slipway and an estimated high-tide draft of 6 metres. The river’s width is also suitable for vessel movement, making it conducive for shipbuilding and repair operations.

“Our phased expansion — from specialised workboats and tugs in Phase I, to integrated repair facilities and floating dry docks in Phase II, and finally to large-scale vessels in Phase III — reflects a carefully sequenced journey,” said Sujay Kewalramani, Chief Executive of KMEW.

The proposed shipyard will feature hull fabrication, pipe, mechanical and electrical workshops, supported by integrated power systems, material-handling infrastructure and automation-ready utilities.

KMEW said the facility will also incorporate sewage treatment systems, structured waste management practices and energy optimisation measures, offering end-to-end capabilities across vessel construction, repair and lifecycle support.

In addition, administrative and workforce infrastructure will include digital office and training spaces, on-site accommodation, and logistics and access systems.

The company noted that the project aligns with key government initiatives such as the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy, the Green Tug Transition Programme, and Maritime India Vision 2030, which are aimed at boosting domestic shipbuilding and strengthening the country’s maritime sector.
