Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to a hybrid nuclear-ready landing vessel concept developed by Seatransport, marking a significant step forward in next-generation, low-emission vessel design.

The AiP confirms that the concept has been reviewed and found feasible from a regulatory and technical standpoint, based on LR’s classification rules and applicable international standards. While not a full class approval, the certification demonstrates that the design is viable and can progress toward further development and potential construction.

Seatransport’s concept integrates hybrid propulsion technology with future-ready provisions for nuclear power integration, positioning the vessel as a long-term solution for decarbonised maritime operations. The design is intended primarily for landing and offshore support operations, where operational flexibility, endurance, and reduced emissions are increasingly critical.

According to LR, the project reflects growing industry interest in alternative energy pathways, including nuclear propulsion, as the maritime sector seeks scalable solutions to meet global decarbonisation targets. Hybrid configurations are seen as an interim step, allowing vessels to operate efficiently today while remaining adaptable to emerging energy technologies.

Seatransport said the AiP strengthens the commercial and technical credibility of the concept and opens the door for further collaboration with technology partners, regulators, and potential charterers. The company added that advancing innovative vessel designs is key to supporting offshore and coastal logistics in a more sustainable manner.

The approval highlights the broader push within the shipping industry to explore advanced propulsion systems and future-proof vessel designs amid tightening environmental regulations and long-term carbon reduction commitments.
