The Merchant Shipping Act, 2025 has been enacted, marking a historic milestone in India’s maritime journey. The landmark legislation modernizes the nation’s shipping framework, bringing it in line with global conventions while driving safety, sustainability, and growth.

The Act paves the way for wider participation by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), corporates, and joint ventures to invest under the Indian flag, boosting ship recycling, tonnage expansion, and ease of doing business.

In addition, the law strengthens welfare, skill development, and social security for Indian seafarers, while introducing robust measures to curb marine pollution and enhance emergency response systems.

Officials said the Act will play a pivotal role in achieving the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, securing both economic growth and environmental protection, and reaffirming India’s ambition to reclaim its historic maritime prominence.
