A historic milestone in India’s maritime trade infrastructure was achieved today with the inauguration of Phase 2 at Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT), operated by PSA International at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva). With this expansion, PSA Mumbai is now the largest standalone container terminal in India, capable of handling 4.8 million TEUs annually.
The development doubles BMCT’s existing capacity of 2.4 million TEUs, extending its quay length to 2,000 metres and equipping it with 24 quay cranes, 72 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), and seamless rail connectivity to India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior dignitaries, including officials from the Government of Maharashtra and Singapore, underlining the project’s role in strengthening bilateral infrastructure cooperation.
Strategic Significance
The Phase 2 expansion is expected to:
Enhance cargo-handling efficiency and vessel turnaround at India’s busiest port.
Boost India’s trade competitiveness and connectivity with global markets.
Generate employment opportunities and spur economic growth in Maharashtra.
Strengthen the India–Singapore partnership, with PSA International already investing over US$2.3 billion in India.
BMCT’s Phase 2 has been “facility-ready” since June 2025, and today’s commissioning is set to reshape the logistics and trade landscape of the region.
Industry Response
Industry experts have hailed the expansion as a “game-changer” for Indian exports, especially at a time when global supply chains are seeking more reliable and efficient hubs. With its cutting-edge equipment and multimodal infrastructure, PSA Mumbai is positioned to become a key driver of India’s maritime growth story.
