Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) continues to accelerate the development of its next-generation, environmentally friendly fleet powered primarily by clean, low-impact alternative fuels. As part of this initiative, MOL has introduced a new hull design that blends the corporate color blue, symbolizing the ocean, with turquoise, representing the group’s environmental commitment. The design visually reflects the MOL Group Mission: “From the blue oceans, we sustain people’s lives and ensure a prosperous future,” underscoring its dedication to building a sustainable society.

The newly delivered Energia Grandeur is a dual-fuel Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) capable of operating on both LPG and conventional heavy fuel oil. When running on LPG, the vessel reduces carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by approximately 20%, while sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter (PM), and other air pollutants are reduced by around 90% compared to heavy fuel oil operations.

In addition to LPG transportation, the vessel is designed to carry ammonia, a zero-carbon fuel at the point of combustion and a key candidate for next-generation clean energy. Demand for ammonia is expected to grow significantly as global efforts toward decarbonization intensify.

The Energia Grandeur is also equipped with a shaft generator, enhancing operational efficiency and enabling further reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to conventional LPG dual-fuel VLGCs. The vessel’s financing incorporates a transition-linked loan, reinforcing MOL’s commitment to sustainable finance aligned with environmental performance targets.

TotalEnergies, which has built a strong partnership with the MOL Group across marine fuel trading, LNG carrier charters, and LNG bunkering operations, has entered into a new charter agreement for the vessel. This collaboration further strengthens the long-standing relationship between the two companies.

Environmental strategy remains a central pillar of MOL’s group management plan, “BLUE ACTION 2035.” Under its MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2, the company has set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Through continued innovation, alternative fuel adoption, and group-wide initiatives, MOL aims to contribute meaningfully to the realization of a decarbonized global society.
