Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are set to play a central role in India’s export growth strategy, as the government rolls out a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s export ecosystem and boosting global competitiveness.

Officials say the renewed focus on MSMEs is driven by their significant contribution to India’s exports, employment generation, and manufacturing output. The sector accounts for a substantial share of outbound shipments, particularly in segments such as textiles, engineering goods, handicrafts, and processed foods.

To enhance MSME participation in global trade, the Centre is working on improving access to credit, simplifying compliance procedures, and expanding digital trade infrastructure. Policy measures are also being aligned to support easier market access, including assistance for quality certification, branding, and participation in international trade fairs.

Logistics and supply chain efficiency remain a key priority, with efforts underway to reduce turnaround times, lower freight costs, and improve port connectivity. The government is also encouraging MSMEs to adopt e-commerce platforms and integrate with global value chains to expand their international reach.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the push, noting that targeted support could help smaller exporters scale operations and diversify into new markets. However, challenges such as limited financing, technology gaps, and exposure to global demand fluctuations continue to persist.

With MSMEs positioned at the core of export-led growth, policymakers aim to unlock their full potential, enabling India to strengthen its foothold in global trade and achieve sustained export expansion in the coming years.
