    Japanese containerline Ocean Network Express (ONE) has for the first time utilised shore power during lift-on and lift-off operations of an alternative marine power (AMP) container in a Chinese port.

    This was done ahead of a symposium which shared best practices and explored innovative approaches to shore power utilization.

    Before the symposium, ONE held a trial and commissioning of its AMP container at Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group’s terminal. This approach is a proven method of reducing emissions while in port.

    When vessels equipped with AMP facilities which do not have a fixed type cable reel or an onboard AMP container arrive at a port, a containerized AMP unit stored at the terminal is lifted onto the vessel to enable shore power connection. Before the vessel departs, the AMP container is lifted off.

    “The use of an AMP unit is a familiar and effective approach within this industry. To be successful, close cooperation among various concerned parties is necessary. We believe this will contribute to carbon footprint reduction in a practical and expedited way, and hope it is a good symbol of collaboration among relevant parties,” said Hiroki Tsujii, ONE’s global chief officer.

    During the symposium, attendees witnessed a live demonstration of the AMP container and shore power usage on a vessel equipped with an AMP container – a vessel successfully connected to shore power and the country’s first ship-shore collaborative mobile AMP container power connection mode after its commissioning.
