Pacific International Lines (PIL) has been designated as the ocean carrier for the inaugural zero-tariff export shipment from Kenya to China, marking a significant milestone in bilateral trade relations.
The official flag-off ceremony was held at the Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway Terminus and was attended by high-level dignitaries, including Han Zheng and Kithure Kindiki, underscoring the importance of the initiative in enhancing economic cooperation between the two nations.
The inaugural consignment comprises 54 containers loaded with Kenyan agricultural and processed products such as avocados, avocado oil, coffee, and beans. The cargo was transported from Nairobi to the Port of Mombasa via the Madaraka Express before being shipped onward to China aboard PIL’s Kota Manis vessel under its East Africa Service (EAS).
The zero-tariff arrangement is expected to open new market opportunities for Kenyan exporters by reducing trade barriers and improving competitiveness in the Chinese market. It also reflects broader efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and trade integration across Africa.
PIL said its involvement highlights its commitment to facilitating global trade and supporting African exporters in leveraging emerging opportunities under China’s zero-tariff policy, paving the way for increased export volumes and economic growth across the region.
