Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, HD Kumaraswamy, on Sunday reaffirmed the government’s vision to position India as a global hub for steel production and exports. Highlighting the sector’s role in India’s industrial growth, Kumaraswamy said that new export markets are being actively tapped to boost outbound shipments and enhance competitiveness.

“India’s steel industry is at the cusp of transformation. With rising domestic production, technological advancements, and policy support, we are opening new global markets to make India a leading force in steel exports,” the Minister said.

He underlined that the government is working closely with industry stakeholders to expand production capacity, modernize infrastructure, and reduce input costs, while also promoting sustainable and green steel practices.

India is already the world’s second-largest steel producer, and with steady growth in infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing sectors, officials believe the country is well placed to scale up its export footprint.

Kumaraswamy added that trade outreach efforts with emerging markets in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia are yielding positive responses, creating opportunities for Indian steelmakers to diversify beyond traditional buyers.
