The Port of Oakland has published its 2024 TEU figures reporting 2.26 million TEUs moved, which marks a 9.5 per cent rise compared to 2023.

The 2024 cargo data reflects a long-term growth trend in consumer spending in the San Francisco Bay Area and the rest of the country.

On the full container side, imports saw a strong 15 per cent increase in 2024, while exports grew by 5.4 per cent year-over-year (YoY), highlighting balanced growth across key markets.

Despite an 8 per cent decline in the overall US refrigerated (reefer) market in 2024, the Port of Oakland demonstrated resilience, limiting reefer volume declines to just 4 per cent, thereby significantly outperforming broader market trends.

“Consumer demand has remained resilient, driving higher import volumes through the Port,” said Port of Oakland Maritime Director Bryan Brandes.

“This performance underscores the port’s strong foundation for continued growth and its critical role in global trade.”

Earlier this year, the Port of Oakland set a new benchmark for shore power usage in the first half of 2024, with an average of 94 per cent of container ships plugging into its electric grid.
