A comprehensive project to upgrade and modernize greater Kolkata’s inland water transport (IWT) system, at a cost of Rs 1,021 crore, was discussed at a workshop on Wednesday. Since its approval on February 17, 2021, the Bengal Inland Water Transport and Logistic and Spatial Development Project has already made substantial progress, with a focus on the GangaBhagirathi-Hooghly River System, known as National Waterway-I, stretching from Farakka to Haldia, spanning approximately 560km and serving as a crucial transportation route for both passengers and cargo. The project has a 2026 deadline.

“The project includes the introduction of 29 new pontoons, featuring enhanced safety features like railings, covered gangways, anti-skid paint, and ramps, ensuring that elderly and differently-abled individuals can board vessels with ease. Passenger waiting areas have been upgraded to offer comfort and safety, complete with attached toilets, smart ticket gates and computerised ticket counters,” said transport secretary Soumitra Mohan.

To bolster capacity and comfort, 22 new passenger ferry vessels have been constructed, equipped with fuel-efficient engines, soundproof engine rooms, spacious passenger areas, and comfortable 3×2 seating. They also have lifebuoys and life jackets, he added.

Looking toward a greener future, the project is preparing to introduce electric “Green Vessels”. Additionally, 15 new jetties are in the pipeline to enhance regional accessibility, particularly within the Kolkata Metropolitan Authority area. Large-scale passenger terminals are nearing completion in high-volume passenger sites, including Howrah, Millennium Park, Panihati, Chinsurah, Naihati, Najirganj and Metiabruz, among others.
