Assam’s renowned Tezpur litchis have received a major endorsement from Singapore, with the country’s envoy urging exporters and authorities to increase shipments of the premium fruit to international markets. The call comes amid growing demand for the Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged litchis, which have gained popularity among consumers in Singapore for their distinctive sweetness, aroma and quality.

During interactions with stakeholders involved in agricultural exports, the Singapore envoy highlighted the strong market potential for Tezpur litchis and encouraged efforts to scale up exports. The diplomat noted that the fruit has been well received in Singapore and could secure a larger share of the country’s fresh fruit imports if supply volumes are expanded and maintained consistently.

Tezpur litchis, cultivated primarily in Assam’s Sonitpur district, are known for their unique taste, juicy pulp and bright red appearance. The fruit enjoys GI-tag status, which helps distinguish it in domestic and international markets. Exporters have increasingly targeted overseas destinations, including Singapore and the Middle East, as demand for premium Indian fruits continues to grow.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), in collaboration with state agencies and exporters, has been promoting fresh fruit exports from India by strengthening cold-chain logistics, packaging standards and market access initiatives. Recent consignments of Tezpur litchis shipped to Singapore have demonstrated the export potential of the product and opened opportunities for larger commercial volumes.

Industry stakeholders believe that expanding exports could provide higher returns to growers while enhancing Assam’s presence in global horticultural trade. Improved post-harvest handling, better air cargo connectivity and stronger links between producers and international buyers are expected to play a crucial role in sustaining export growth.

With overseas demand rising and international recognition increasing, Tezpur litchis are emerging as one of India’s promising horticultural export products, offering new opportunities for farmers and exporters while strengthening the country’s agricultural trade footprint in Southeast Asia.
