Copenhagen-based Svitzer Group A/S has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Cochin Shipyard Ltd to construct next-generation, 26-metre electric TRAnsverse tugs in India. The agreement, inked on October 30 during India Maritime Week in Mumbai, marks a key step in Svitzer’s electrification roadmap and reinforces India’s position as a global maritime manufacturing hub.

The collaboration will leverage Svitzer’s expertise in sustainable towage and Cochin Shipyard’s proven shipbuilding capabilities to produce highly manoeuvrable, energy-efficient tugs that support India’s green port and decarbonisation goals.

“These tugs will advance cleaner, safer and more efficient harbour operations,” said Svitzer CEO Kasper Nilaus. Cochin Shipyard CMD Madhu Nair said the partnership underscores India’s growing role in building world-class, environmentally progressive vessels.

The electric TRAnsverse tugs are planned for Svitzer’s global fleet renewal and could also serve Indian ports, aligning with the Government’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
