In a major push toward maritime decarbonisation, Welspun New Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, to develop green methanol infrastructure aimed at supporting India’s transition to cleaner marine fuels.
The agreement, formalised during India Maritime Week 2025, underscores a shared commitment to advancing sustainable bunkering operations and green shipping initiatives. The MoU was signed in the presence of Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority, and Kapil Maheshwari, Managing Director and CEO, Welspun New Energy.
Under the partnership, the two entities will collaborate to establish facilities for the production and supply of green methanol — a low-carbon alternative to conventional marine fuels. The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy to reduce emissions from the maritime sector and promote renewable energy-based fuel solutions.
Welspun New Energy currently holds 20,000 acres of land in Gujarat to develop 5 GW of renewable energy capacity for producing green hydrogen and its derivatives. The company has also been allocated 200 acres at Deendayal Port for developing green fuel infrastructure, reinforcing its role in building India’s green energy value chain.
Commenting on the collaboration, Maheshwari said, “This partnership marks a critical stride in building India’s green maritime ecosystem. By integrating renewable energy with sustainable marine fuel infrastructure, we aim to catalyse the transition toward cleaner propulsion systems and elevate India’s stature within the global green economy.”
The development of green methanol facilities at Kandla Port is expected to significantly contribute to India’s decarbonisation roadmap and bolster international efforts toward sustainable maritime operations.
