Telangana is set to introduce dry port facilities to enhance logistics services for its industries. A dry port, an inland terminal connecting to a sea port via rail or road, allows exporters to complete customs formalities, saving both time and cost. A senior official from the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) confirmed that a dry port in the northern corridor of the state is in the planning stages and will be developed through a public-private partnership.
The government is also exploring the possibility of establishing additional dry ports to further boost exports. Currently, exports from Telangana are routed through ports in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The idea for a major dry port in Telangana is not new. In July 2021, the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led government approved the establishment of a 1,400-acre multi-modal logistics park near Nalgonda on a public-private partnership basis. Plans for two integrated container depots (ICDs) in Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Customs department, were also approved to promote exports. Additionally, the Cabinet gave the green light for the
development of 10 integrated logistics parks across the state. However, none of these projects have been realized.
Under the current Congress-led government, headed by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, efforts are being made to fast-track the dry port project.
With Telangana’s industrial strengths in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, textiles, and defence and aerospace, developing robust logistics infrastructure is crucial. The state’s logistics sector is growing at an annual rate of 12%, and the development of new industrial corridors is expected to further boost demand.
