V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Tuticorin, marked a significant milestone in its operational history with the successful berthing of M.V. MSC Michaela at the Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal (DBGT) on December 21, 2025.

Measuring 304 metres in length overall and with a capacity of 6,724 TEUs, M.V. MSC Michaela is now officially the largest container vessel to ever call at V.O. Chidambaranar Port. This achievement underscores the port’s robust infrastructure, modern handling facilities, and strategic positioning as a key hub for major mainline shipping services in South India.

The berthing of such a large vessel demonstrates the port’s capability to handle ultra-large container ships, reflecting its continuous upgrades in draft, quay length, and cargo handling equipment. The Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal, operated with state-of-the-art technology, facilitated the smooth docking, loading, and unloading operations, setting a benchmark for efficiency and operational readiness.

Port officials highlighted that this milestone not only strengthens Tuticorin’s position on the global maritime map but also enhances trade connectivity for Southern India, allowing for faster and more efficient movement of containerized cargo.

“This is a proud moment for V.O. Chidambaranar Port,” said a senior port authority representative. “The arrival of M.V. MSC Michaela reinforces our commitment to supporting large-scale maritime operations and providing seamless services to global shipping lines. It is also a testament to the port’s strategic investments in infrastructure, ensuring we remain future-ready for the evolving demands of international shipping.”

The port has been steadily expanding its container handling capacity, aiming to attract more direct calls from major shipping lines, reduce transit time, and facilitate the growth of trade through Tuticorin. Analysts believe that accommodating ultra-large container ships will further boost the region’s economic activity, generate employment opportunities, and enhance India’s trade competitiveness.

With this landmark event, V.O. Chidambaranar Port continues to cement its role as a key maritime gateway, capable of supporting the country’s ambitions to handle larger vessels, higher cargo volumes, and increased global trade.
