Vizhinjam port and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport received an excellence award from state government for pollution control and environmental protection.

Based on the excellence of projects implemented for environmental protection and pollution control, Adani Vizhinjam Port and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport were awarded first place by state pollution control board, said a press release.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the awards at Aura 2025 Conclave held in Kochi on Saturday.

Though the port and airport can be noise-intensive and can cause pollution risks, the facilities carried out a series of measures to keep environmental and noise pollution under control.

The port ensures that dust and noise levels are within permissible limits by using modern machines and equipment even though construction was carried out and will continue to expand the berth and sea wall. An efficient oil spill containment mechanism was installed at the port and the agency is carrying out regular drills with coast guard.

At the airport, Adani Group follows a zero-waste to landfill policy and adopts a reduce, reuse, recycle, reprocess principle when it comes to waste management, said an official. The airport is using biogas for energy production and uses electric vehicles to reduce emissions and non-biodegradable waste is given to the vendor for disposal. The landfill diversion was 99.5 per cent last year.
