The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) announced the release of its report titled Roadmap for India’s Energy Transition in the Transport Sector at an event focused on aligning transport strategies with India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The report provided an indepth analysis of future transport demands, emission trajectories, and technology-driven approaches to mitigate environmental impact. The event, which was attended by senior government officials, railway authorities, and industry stakeholders, highlighted the pressing need for sustainable transport solutions to meet India’s ambitious climate targets.
Sanjay Seth, Senior Director at TERI, stated in his welcome address that reducing emissions from the transport sector is of critical importance. He stressed the necessity of adopting cleaner technologies and fuels, adding that the report addressed all facets of the energy transition in the transport sector while prioritising energy security alongside environmental sustainability.
K.R.K. Reddy, Additional Member (Traffic) of the Railway Board, described the report as a
comprehensive guide for overcoming the challenges of decarbonising India’s rapidly expanding transport sector in alignment with the NDC goals. He remarked that the Railways, which have been integral to India’s connectivity and economic growth, had achieved significant milestones in sustainable mobility by electrifying 99% of its network and reducing carbon emissions. He further mentioned that ongoing initiatives aim to enhance infrastructure, connectivity, and passenger experiences. Congratulating TERI, he noted that the report not only served as a roadmap for energy transition but also emphasised affordability and accessibility.
Mukul Saran Mathur, Additional Member (Commercial) of the Railway Board, shared similar
views, pointing out that the Railways’ transition would significantly impact the country’s overall energy consumption, which currently accounts for approximately two per cent of total national energy use. He highlighted various efforts by the Railways to reduce energy consumption, including the adoption of LED lighting, green buildings, efficient locomotives, regenerative braking systems, improved payload-tare ratios, and energy audits.
Shri Prakash, Distinguished Fellow at TERI, referred to the report as a cornerstone of India’s efforts to transition the transport sector towards sustainability. He emphasised that sustainable transport must be economically feasible, socially inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.
Citing the impact of transport on air pollution, which accounts for 30–40% of the total pollution, he underlined the importance of sustainable solutions for the sector.
