Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will deliver the cargo handling and fuel supply systems for four 88,000 cubic metres (cbm) Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) under construction at COSCO Shipping (Qidong) Offshore.
The agreement, finalised in two orders across Q4 2024 and Q2 2025, includes full engineering, materials, and system commissioning, along with gas trials and on-site support.
The scope covers machinery, instrumentation, electrical, and control systems.
While this is Wärtsilä’s first VLGC systems contract with COSCO, the two companies have worked together on previous projects, including the supply of methanol-powered auxiliary engines for five new container vessels for COSCO Shipping Lines Co., each fitted with three 8-cylinder and two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 32M engines.
Delivery of equipment will begin in the second half of 2025, withvessel operations slated to start from late 2026.
Recently, Wärtsilä announced that it would deliver hybrid propulsion systems for four new 10,700 deadweight tonnage geared tween decker vessels. The company booked the order in Q1 2025. The ships are being built for Dutch shipowner and maritime service provider Vertom Group. Each system combines the Wärtsilä 25 medium-speed 4-stroke engine with a hybrid drive train featuring PTO, PTI, and PTH.
