Port of Rotterdam is moving forward with a new circular iron fuel production initiative as part of its broader clean energy and industrial decarbonisation strategy. The project aims to develop iron powder as a recyclable carbon-free fuel that can be used in high-temperature industrial processes and power generation.

Under the initiative, iron powder will be combusted to release energy, producing iron oxide as a by-product, which can later be converted back into iron using renewable energy sources, creating a circular energy cycle. Developers say the technology could provide a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels for sectors that are difficult to electrify, including heavy industry and maritime applications.

The Port of Rotterdam has been actively investing in hydrogen, biofuels, carbon capture, and other low-emission technologies as part of its ambition to become a major European clean energy hub. Industry observers noted that the iron fuel project could strengthen the port’s role in advancing innovative energy solutions and supporting Europe’s long-term climate transition goals.
