Hardly nine months into the commencement of the commercial operations, the Vizhinjam International Seaport has achieved a significant milestone by handling over 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo. The achievement of the port, operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), surpassed initial projections of one million TEU in a year.
According to Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan, there are only a few ports in the world that have exceeded their installed capacity in the first year of operation. The support extended by the State government, the entire public, including fishermen, security agencies and shipping companies, and the efficiency of the Adani Vizhinjam Port paved the way for this achievement, he said.
According to the concession agreement, it was estimated that a total of three lakh containers could be handled in the first year. “However, Vizhinjam has handled more than three times the volume. According to the figures to date, 10.12 lakh TEUs have been handled since the commercial operations at the port started on December 3, 2024. By December 2025, we are expected to be able to handle 13-14 lakh instead of 10 lakh (one million),” he said.
