Frankfurt Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport have signed a strategic partnership to strengthen cooperation in the cargo sector.
The agreement expands a long-standing relationship and sets the stage for deeper coordination between the two major air cargo hubs. It focuses on cooperation within airport communities, improving regulatory processes and identifying new market opportunities.
Alexander Laukenmann, Senior Executive Vice President Aviation at Fraport AG, said, “The demand for air cargo between Asia and Europe is growing rapidly. The agreement with Pudong means that Fraport has one of China’s largest cargo airports as a partner. Our cooperation is an important step toward meeting the increasing needs of international trade.”
Frankfurt Airport handles significant cargo volumes for Europe and serves as a link between Asian and European markets. Both airports expect the partnership to support more efficient cargo flows as demand for global trade rises. Projects under consideration include a shared rapid response and communication channel to speed up customs and regulatory procedures , and joint roadshows to strengthen cargo connections across markets.
China remains central to global export activity, and online retail continues to add to cargo volumes. Frankfurt Airport processes about five million e-commerce consignments every month. The new partnership aims to improve cross-border handling and work toward shared standards.
The agreement follows a year of engagement after the Cargo Roadshow in Shanghai and marks a new phase of collaboration with key players in the Chinese aviation sector. It is also part of the Frankfurt CargoHub Masterplan, through which Fraport aims to raise the airport’s competitiveness in the cargo market.
