In a move set to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a shipbuilding and ship repair hub, the State government will sign key investment MoUs with global and domestic maritime companies at the Madurai edition of the TN Rising Conclave on Sunday.

According to sources, the line-up includes significant shipbuilding projects along the Cuddalore and South Tamil Nadu coastlines. One of the investments is expected from a major global shipping company, though its identity could not be confirmed. In addition, the Chowgule Group’s shipbuilding division is slated to announce a commitment of around ₹7,500 crore for a new facility in South Tamil Nadu. Further, Chowgle Global will ink an MoU for an estimated ₹1,000-crore ship repair complex in Cuddalore district.

These developments are expected to energise MSME clusters in the surrounding regions by creating new demand for ancillary manufacturing and services.

The investment push comes as Tamil Nadu moves to finalise its Maritime and Shipbuilding Policy, aimed at incentivising new shipyards and attracting global players. The State is working to transform its 1,000-km coastline into a “corridor of immense blue economy opportunities,” Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa recently said.

Beyond shipping, companies from aerospace, defence, IT and IT-enabled services will join the conclave to sign pacts with the government. The event will also showcase progress on the SIPCOT Melur project and outline plans for a major industrial park in the newly created Melur district near Madurai.

While Madurai has long been known for its MSME base in textiles and industrial products, it is now emerging as an attractive destination for IT firms—both domestic and global—drawn by the region’s talent pool. The city is also nurturing a growing ecosystem of agritech start-ups. Like other editions of the TN Rising Conclave, the Madurai event will highlight investments planned across multiple districts.
