The upcoming 6-lane greenfield Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor is set to transform connectivity across central and eastern India, reducing travel time between the two cities from nearly 12 hours to just 5 hours once completed in December 2026.

Developed by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways at a cost of ₹16,482 crore, the corridor traverses the forests of Chhattisgarh, the mineral belts of Odisha, and the hills of Andhra Pradesh. It will shorten the current distance of 597 km on NH-26 to 465 km, cutting 132 km and saving close to seven hours of travel time—offering significant fuel savings and lower transportation expenses for both public and freight operators.

Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti vision, the access-controlled economic corridor is expected to unlock faster logistics, improve supply chains, and enhance port connectivity. Industries across Chhattisgarh and Odisha will gain direct access to Visakhapatnam Port and the Chennai–Kolkata National Highway, enabling quicker exports and smoother movement of goods.

“This project is not just a road—it is a gateway to new opportunities,” the ministry said in its statement, highlighting its impact on tourism, job creation, and real estate development along the route.

For transporters, the highway signals a major operational shift. Vishal, a lorry owner who frequently moves cargo between the two cities, said the reduced travel time will bring immense relief. “Earlier, the journey took one and a half days. Now, I can start during the day and reach by night,” he noted, adding that lower diesel consumption and reduced vehicle wear and tear will directly benefit transport operators.

Farmers along the corridor are also witnessing rapid socio-economic transformation. Land values in several regions have surged dramatically. “Our land was valued at ₹15 lakh per acre earlier. Now it is close to ₹1.5 crore,” said one farmer, underscoring how infrastructure-led development is reshaping rural livelihoods.

Residents of Vizianagaram district echoed similar sentiments. “Initially, we were sad to give our land. But now, as the corridor nears completion, hope has replaced doubt,” said one villager, noting that land prices have more than doubled and the project promises better opportunities for future generations.

Another farmer, Srinivasulu from Jami village, said the value of the remaining land had increased significantly. “Villagers are feeling happy about this upcoming greenfield highway,” he said.

Beyond economic advantages, the Raipur–Visakhapatnam corridor will improve mobility for tribal and remote districts, including Dhamtari, Keshkal, Kanker (Chhattisgarh), Borigumma, Nabarangpur, Koraput (Odisha), and Ramabhadrapuram, Araku (Andhra Pradesh). The enhanced connectivity is expected to integrate these regions more effectively with markets and essential services, fostering inclusive development.

The 6-lane, access-controlled highway—designed for speeds of 100 km/hr—will also decongest the existing 2-lane NH-26, offering safer, smoother and more reliable travel for passengers and freight operators alike.

With construction progressing rapidly, the Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor stands poised to become one of the region’s most impactful infrastructure projects, reshaping connectivity and catalysing growth across three states.
