Port of Antwerp-Bruges has secured a €500 million revolving credit facility, strengthening its financial capacity as it prepares for a major investment programme aimed at expanding infrastructure, improving efficiency and supporting the port’s long-term competitiveness.
The financing ranks among the larger debt transactions in Belgium’s transport sector and forms part of a broader strategy to secure funding for the port’s planned investments. The facility provides additional financial flexibility as Antwerp-Bruges moves ahead with projects across its extensive port complex.
The port is planning investments of around €5 billion, with spending expected to support additional capacity, infrastructure upgrades, sustainability initiatives and other strategic developments. The funding comes as European ports face growing pressure to modernise facilities while adapting to changing trade patterns and stricter environmental requirements.
Port of Antwerp-Bruges has continued to invest despite challenging market conditions. In the first half of 2026, the port handled 133.9 million tonnes of maritime cargo, down 2.4% year on year, while container market share remained stable. The port said investments in additional capacity, efficient infrastructure and sustainable growth were continuing.
One major development is the Extra Container Handling Capacity Antwerp (ECA) project. The initiative is designed to add capacity for around 7 million TEUs, helping the port accommodate future container growth and maintain its position as a major European logistics hub.
The new credit line therefore comes at a strategically important time for Antwerp-Bruges. By strengthening its financing position, the port can continue advancing infrastructure and capacity projects while responding to the increasing demands placed on major European gateways.
The investment programme is also expected to support the port’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient operating model, with projects focused on energy transition, digitalisation, multimodal connectivity and future cargo-handling capacity.
With the €500 million facility in place, Port of Antwerp-Bruges is positioning itself to move ahead with its longer-term €5 billion investment agenda, reinforcing its role as a critical gateway for European trade.
