India’s food processing sector is witnessing rapid expansion, marked by a sharp rise in value addition and a growing presence in global markets. The share of processed food in the country’s agri-food exports increased from 13.7% in 2014–15 to 20.4% in 2024–25, reflecting a decisive shift towards higher-value products.
During the same period, the sector’s gross value added (GVA) grew by 67%, rising from ₹1.34 lakh crore to ₹2.24 lakh crore, underscoring its increasing contribution to the national economy.
The growth highlights the impact of policy support, improved infrastructure, and rising private investment aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing processing capacity. Industry experts note that the expanding share of processed foods not only improves farmer incomes but also strengthens India’s competitiveness in global agri-food value chains.
With continued focus on technology adoption, export-oriented processing, and supply chain integration, the sector is expected to play a key role in boosting agri-exports and positioning India as a major global hub for value-added food products.
