Rwanda has officially launched air cargo exports of fresh fruits and vegetables, marking a significant step in expanding the country’s agricultural trade footprint. The initiative is aimed at connecting Rwandan farmers with high-value international markets, improving income opportunities, and promoting the country’s reputation as a reliable source of quality produce.
The first shipments, comprising a variety of fruits and vegetables, are being transported via dedicated air freight services to key destinations in Europe and the Middle East. Authorities and industry stakeholders highlighted that air transport will allow perishable goods to reach international markets faster, ensuring freshness and meeting stringent quality standards demanded by overseas buyers.
The government has been working with private logistics providers, exporters, and farmers’ cooperatives to strengthen the supply chain, including cold storage facilities, handling infrastructure at Kigali International Airport, and compliance with phytosanitary regulations . Officials said this initiative is expected to boost Rwanda’s agricultural exports, create jobs in the logistics and farming sectors, and contribute to the country’s economic diversification strategy.
Experts note that with growing demand for high-quality fresh produce globally, Rwanda’s air freight exports could open up new market opportunities for smallholder farmers, enhance export revenues, and position the nation as a key player in the regional agricultural trade landscape.
