The Government of India has set an ambitious target to position the country as the fifth-largest shipping nation globally in terms of shipbuilding and ship ownership by Amrit Kaal 2047, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said on Tuesday.

Addressing the Cochin Marine Seminar (COMARSEM 2026) virtually, the Minister said the Centre is implementing a series of policy, infrastructure and investment-led reforms to strengthen India’s maritime ecosystem and enhance its global competitiveness. The seminar is being organised by the Institute of Marine Engineers of India (IMEI) in collaboration with the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).

Highlighting the strategic importance of shipbuilding, Sonowal described it as a “mother industry” with immense potential to generate large-scale employment, boost manufacturing capabilities and contribute significantly to the national economy. He noted that a strong domestic shipbuilding sector would also enhance India’s self-reliance and maritime security.

“At the same time, growth must be sustainable. Our approach integrates economic expansion with protection of the marine environment and safe living conditions for future generations,” the Minister said, underlining the government’s commitment to green and responsible maritime development.

Sonowal emphasized that initiatives such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, Sagarmala, Maritime India Vision 2030, and the upcoming Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 are creating a robust framework for port-led development, modern shipyards, coastal shipping, and inland waterways. These initiatives aim to reduce logistics costs, promote innovation, and attract private and foreign investment into the sector.

He also acknowledged the critical role of marine engineers, ship designers, surveyors and seafarers in achieving the national maritime vision, stating that capacity building, skill development and adoption of advanced technologies will be key enablers in the journey ahead.

The Cochin Marine Seminar (COMARSEM 2026) brings together maritime professionals, policymakers, industry leaders and academicians to deliberate on emerging trends, regulatory developments, sustainability, and technological advancements in the shipping and marine engineering sectors.

The Minister expressed confidence that with coordinated efforts from government, industry and professional bodies, India is well-positioned to emerge as a major global maritime powerhouse by 2047.
