Finnish material handling specialist Konecranes has secured an order to supply eight new hybrid Konecranes Noell NSC 644 EHY Straddle Carriers to HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH at the Port of Hamburg. The contract was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025, and the units are expected to enter service by the end of 2026.
The hybrid straddle carriers will be used for quay-to-yard container transport, stacking operations, and land-side truck and rail handling, replacing older diesel-driven machines currently in operation. Each carrier is equipped with a diesel generator and onboard battery system, enabling significant reductions in fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions while maintaining high performance levels.
HHLA said the investment supports its long-term development strategy and CO₂ reduction goals, as well as its ongoing efforts to improve productivity at Container Terminal Tollerort. The new machines also feature a powerlift system to enhance operator comfort during operations.
Built on Konecranes’ latest modular design platform, the carriers offer flexibility for future upgrades to fully electric or hydrogen powertrains, giving terminal operators adaptability as energy strategies evolve and emission regulations tighten.
Representatives from both companies noted that the order deepens an already strong partnership and aligns with broader industry goals of decarbonising port operations and advancing more sustainable cargo-handling solutions.
