Indian Railways has initiated trials of stainless steel containers designed specifically for the transportation of bulk salt, aiming to enhance cargo efficiency, durability, and operational safety across its freight network.

The pilot project seeks to address long-standing challenges associated with salt transportation, including corrosion of conventional containers and wagons due to the highly saline nature of the cargo. Stainless steel units are expected to offer improved resistance to rust and structural damage, thereby extending container life and reducing maintenance costs.

Officials said the new container solution could also ensure better cargo protection, minimized contamination, and reduced transit losses, particularly during long-haul movements from major salt-producing regions such as Gujarat and Rajasthan to consumption hubs across the country.

If the trials prove successful, Indian Railways may scale up deployment of stainless steel containers as part of its broader strategy to modernize freight operations and support bulk commodity movement through safer and more sustainable logistics solutions.

The initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to strengthen cargo infrastructure , improve asset longevity, and enhance the reliability of bulk freight services.
