The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 8.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, underscoring its position as one of the busiest container gateways in the United States.

Port authorities said the strong annual throughput reflects resilient consumer demand, steady import volumes, and improved supply chain fluidity compared to previous years marked by congestion and volatility. The performance also highlights the port’s continued role as a critical trade hub for the US East Coast.

Officials attributed the growth to expanded terminal capacity, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced rail connectivity to inland markets. Investments in on-dock rail facilities and yard optimisation have helped streamline cargo movement and reduce dwell times.

The port complex, which serves a vast consumer and industrial base across the Northeast and Midwest, continues to benefit from its strategic location and diversified cargo mix, including retail goods, machinery, automotive components, and food products.

Industry analysts noted that the port’s performance in 2025 reflects broader shifts in shipping patterns, with some cargo volumes stabilising after pandemic-era surges and supply chain reconfigurations.

Looking ahead, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it will continue to prioritise capacity expansion, sustainability initiatives, and digitalisation efforts to support long-term trade growth and operational efficiency.
